Satakunta’s musical offering ranges from symphonies to rock, with its brightest star being none other than Pori Jazz. Other well-established music events include Rauma Blues, Rauma Festivo Music Festival and Satasoitto Chamber Music Festival.
In July, SuomiAreena, a relaxed informal forum for discussing social issues, will be held in
conjunction with Pori Jazz. This is followed by the traditional Lace Week in Rauma.
Satakunta offers theatrical events all year round. Pori Theatre, Rauma City Theatre and Rakastajat Theatre are some of the more famous companies. This is complemented by numerous amateur groups and summer theatres. National independent theatre company events include the Lainsuojattomat (Outlaws) Festival in Pori and the Willi Kansa Theatre Festival in Karvia.
The people of Satakunta are also a sporting lot. The region has two venerable ice hockey clubs: Rauman Lukko and Porin Ässät. Sports teams have enjoyed success, for example, in bandy, rink ball, ringette, Finnish baseball, underwater rugby and floor hockey.
Finland’s largest and most wide-ranging children’s sports camp, Pitkis-Sport is held every year at Pitkäjärvi Recreation Centre in Kokemäki. The summer camp has been in operation since 1963.
Held in July, the Satakunta Folk Row is an outdoor event, where participants row and paddle from Sastamala to Pori on the Kokemäenjoki River. Over the years, this three-day rowing event has become more and more popular among rowers and crowds alike.
